Vth Form Life Science Creates Their Own National Park

For the first three weeks of the school year, Vth Form Life Science students worked on creating their own National Park. National Parks are created by people who care about a piece of land, an historical place or and can articulate why they are important to society.

Students studied what type of place is worth preserving? How are species that live in the existing ecosystems are interconnected? What is the nature of human impact on that land/ecosystem?

Then, Rumsey students learned that National Parks are created by an act of congress. To initiate that process, they wrote to the congress person from the state their park is in to propose the creation of a National Park to preserve that spot—in the words of Theodore Roosevelt—to “leave it as it is” for all time and for future generations to enjoy.
